History

In days gone by, Highgate adjoined the Bishop of London’s hunting estate. The bishop kept a toll house at the point where one of the main northbound roads out of London entered his land and a number of pubs sprang up along the route, including The Gatehouse, which commemorates the toll house. The busy thoroughfare is said to have provided rich pickings for the notorious highwayman, Dick Turpin, in later centuries.
